30D KEYNOTE: Helping Those Who Help Nurture and Maintain Their Resilience - Avoiding Burnout
Throughout this fast-paced, story-filled presentation, Dr. Ungar will show that resilience is much more than just personal ruggedness in the face of adversity. It is instead a reflection of how well individuals, families, institutions and employers work together to create opportunities for us to find our way to the resources we need for well-being while making those resources available in ways that we experience as meaningful. Based on Dr. Ungar’s research around the world and his clinical practice, this presentation uses examples from his new book Change Your World to explore how those who help others can avoid burnout and maintain their own resilience when stressors pile up on the job and at home. Building on recent advances to the science of resilience, 12 factors that make us more resilient as adults will be discussed, along with practical tools participants can use to find the resources they need to cope successfully in culturally and contextually relevant ways (even during a pandemic). Finally,  Dr. Ungar will talk about vicarious resilience, the positive impact we experience as helpers when we nurture resilience in others.

** The “Silent” Bully: The Power of Words vs. Non-Verbal Communication in the Workplace
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” A British rhyme meant to help children stand up to bullying and intimidation. But is that really true? As adults, we know that words DO hurt and that the painful feeling lasts a long time. While words do hurt us, intimidation and bullying do not have to be verbal: the dismissive flick of the hand, the rolling of the eyes, the crossing of the arms on the chest, the “see through you” attitude. The “silent”, non-verbal bullying hurts more, especially when we try to figure out “what we did wrong”.
Based on the latest research in the fields of non-violent communication and emotional intelligence, as well as through case studies and situation analysis, Maria will give you the necessary tools to decipher and deal with the situations in a professional way. Through examples taken from her personal and professional life and by having an open, honest conversation, Maria will demonstrate how you, as a leader, as well as a team member, can promote a safe working environment where people are not afraid to give honest feedback, while you lead them mindfully.

30D Creating a Sustainable Future Together: Engaging Elementary Students in Climate Solutions
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues we face, and students know this. A 2020 survey of over 500 Alberta youths revealed that a strong majority of students are concerned about their future as a result of climate change and want to learn what we can do to address it. In this highly engaging session, learn how to steer clear of gloom and doom and instill confidence, optimism and connectedness in young learners by nurturing a positive relationship with nature. We’ll also demonstrate how it’s never too early to engage your students in real-world, age-appropriate climate solutions that are fun and build hope and agency as students learn how they can play a role in helping build a sustainable future. ** Your Student has a Concussion, Now What? Optimizing Returning to School Following a Concussion
Summary:
Curious about concussions? Want to know how to support students in your classes (core and option) who have sustained a concussion? Join us as we provide an overview of what a concussion is, discuss typical recovery in youth, and how to support students returning to school following a concussion. We will cover a variety of ways to support students including academic accommodations, team-based communication, tools and technology resources, and supporting their social/emotional well-being. Case vignettes will be used to provide examples of students, and what can be done to support them. These vignettes are intended to be interactive and stimulate discussion – what’s worked for you in the past and how can we share that with others?

Detailed Overview:
This workshop will provide a brief overview of concussions including 1) what is a concussion; 2) signs and symptoms of a concussion; 3) how to recognize if a student may have sustained a concussion; 4) typical recovery of a concussion in youth; 5) stepwise recovery patterns for school and sports/physical education class; and 6) how to support a student with a concussion at school.

Most of the time in the session will focus on how to support a student in your class (academic and option classes) or your school who has sustained a concussion. Topics will include 1) provision of academic accommodations; 2) team-based communication; 3) social-emotional support for the student; 4) technology and equipment resources; and 5) the role of the student in their recovery and return to school.

This session will include interactive components, including using case vignettes of students who have sustained a concussion and their symptoms/recovery trajectory. Case vignettes will provide an overview of a student and their symptoms, their academic accommodations (if any) pre-concussion, and their course load (including core and option courses). There will examples used for both junior high and high school students and teachers. You will then work in small groups to determine how best to support the student in their return to school. This will be used to help stimulate discussion and provide opportunity for practicing skills learned in the session. There will also be a dedicated question period at the end of the session.

This session was developed in alignment with recommendations from teachers and school administrators, and students who had sustained a concussion, whom Heather interviewed as part of her PhD thesis work

You can watch a trailer using that link for now. The film will only be available during convention starting at 1:00 pm on Thursday February 24th.

The interconnected epidemics of anxiety, chronic illness and substance abuse are, according to Dr Gabor Maté, normal. But not in the way you might think.

One in five Americans are diagnosed with mental illness in any given year [1]. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in the US for youth aged 15-24 [2], and kills over 800,000 people a year globally [3] and 48,300 in the USA [4]. Drug overdose kills 81,000 in the USA annually [5]. The autoimmunity epidemic affects 24 million people in the USA [6]. What is going on?

In The Wisdom of Trauma, we travel alongside physician, bestselling author and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Gabor Maté to explore why our western society is facing such epidemics. This is a journey with a man who has dedicated his life to understanding the connection between illness, addiction, trauma and society.

“Trauma is not what happens to you.
Trauma is what happens inside you,
as a result of what happens to you.”
— Gabor Maté

Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul.

As this movie is about Trauma, it does include discussion around potential trauma inducing situations. We acknowledge that this content may be difficult for some viewers and we also encourage you to care for your safety and well-being. Should you need to process what you have seen here please connect with the Calgary Distress Center https://www.distresscentre.com/ or call 403.266.HELP (4357).

! Self-Reflexology for less stress, more relaxation, and better sleep
Does your body feel as if it is storing tension? Can’t sleep because your mind is racing? Is your body achy and fatigued? Too tired to get through the day?
My name is Kati Mackenzie and I am a Registered Reflexology Therapist. I am going to show you how to relieve stress and anxiety by massaging specific areas of the face, feet, and ears.
Whether it is a matter of aches and pains, built-up tension or even sleeping problems, you can use these self-reflexology techniques to tackle some of the most frequent issues with which we all struggle. It will take only 5-10 minutes to feel better during the day. You can even incorporate it into your daily routine, to achieve better sleep and a more relaxed, positive mood and mind frame.
Reflexology is a type of therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific points along your feet (face, hands, and ears) to affect the function and health of different parts of the body. The theory is that the nerve endings are stimulated to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to induce rest and relaxation.
You will receive a body map and a handout (pdf) to remember these reflex areas.

30D Wear Your Weird
There’s nothing quite so heart-breaking as seeing a child whose self-esteem and self-belief have taken a serious hit.

Many kids, afraid to get it wrong, start to shrink, cover up and suppress what makes them so unique, so they can fit in to the images they see, knowing that if they act or appear too different, they may be isolated or bullied.

But we can change that.

Imagine watching the kids under your loving care go from confusion to clarity, from lacking direction and feeling powerless to understanding themselves and their purpose a little more, and to feeling empowered throughout the process.

The Wear Your Weird program is designed to introduce kids to the process of discovering who they are through the use of hands-on activities and dynamic discussions, uncovering what makes them fantastically unique and yes, weird.

The results? All those special qualities they were born with become strengths and superpowers—not something to be ashamed of or something to hide.

I designed this program after working with kids on many different levels and in various settings, seeing their struggles with using their voice or worrying about standing out in a crowd.

I’ve seen the difference the Wear Your Weird program makes in the minds and hearts of kids of all ages.

Although this program was originally designed for youth,
it has become apparent that it is valuable learning for everyone.
The ripple effect of having the confidence to be authentic can be felt
in all aspects of life and impact all levels of relationship whether
that be family, school, work, or play.

I don’t think it’s any secret that confident, self-assured kids have more patience and grit to stick with tasks with a little more tenacity. Teaching confidence is not in the curriculum or something you have time to do yourself individually with kids. This program can be taught as an in-person workshop for the entire class to work through in order to create confidence, resilience and allow for more productive learning.
