30D A Flat Earth, Dinosaurs, and the Divine: Can Religion and Science get along?
Secondary students often assume that Religion and Science are inextricably at odds. Even if they can’t articulate exactly why, it is often taken for granted that a person of faith cannot embrace the scientific method and vice versa. This talk dispels caricatures of faithful flat-earthers, delves into the complex relationship between science and religion, considers seminal figures like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Georges Lemaître, and gives a framework for understanding how science and religion are not mutually exclusive.

** Permeating Laudato Si: Cultivating a Green Catholic School from the Inside Out
How do we help our students’ respond to God’s call to be stewards of creation while learning about complex Catholic social teachings? In this session, you will learn more about the importance of Laudato Si and how teaching students the Catholic Moral Decision Making Framework can guide them to action. See an example of how this was developed in a grade 4 classroom. Walk away with a planning template, ideas and resources to help you share this way of living with your students and staff.

Pope Francis’ first encyclical, Laudato Si, addresses all of humanity and calls us to address the deep rooted causes of the ecological crisis facing the Earth. Rooted in Scripture, he provides guidance on how to resolve these issues. As leaders in Catholic education, it is our responsibility to help our students learn about Church teachings and use these teachings to grow in their faith and be stewards of the Earth.

This session will be applicable to both classroom and school-wide social justice projects.

** Prayer as a Personal Relationship with Jesus
“Prayer is being on terms of friendship with God, frequently conversing in secret with Him, who we know, loves us.” St. Theresa of Avila.
God loves us unconditionally, he knows us intimately, and wants to be in a relationship with us. Like any other deep friendship, we cultivate it by communicating. We are all unique, and the way that we best communicate with others varies. Our Catholic Church recognizes this and gives us a rich and vast ways to pray.
During this session we will experience the three forms of prayer: vocal, Christian Meditation, and contemplative prayer. We will be looking at practical ways to cultivate our own personal prayer as well as our students. Areas of prayer include traditional prayers, Lectio and Visio Divina, Praying in Color and Bible Journaling.
This session is not only experiential, where you will have the opportunity to practice various forms of prayer, but you will also have resources that you can use in your school and classroom.

30D The Psalms, Air Pods, and God
Ever wonder what music is streaming in the ear buds of your students? Often woven into the cacophony of bass and treble are profound existential themes that speak to the hearts of listeners. Within the Bible’s book of Psalms, we also find a collection of song lyrics that grapple with deep questions of the soul. This talk explores the structure and themes of the Psalms, draws connections to parallel themes in contemporary music, and provides educators with suggestions for engaging both student interest and curricular outcomes in Religious Education.

** Sacred Scripture and Storytelling
Bible stories? I’ve heard that one before! One of the aspects of teaching in a Catholic school is our effectiveness at opening our student’s hearts to scripture stories and our willingness to share our own stories of faith. How do we develop this skill? We look to Jesus who was the best storyteller that ever lived! His stories and delivery caught the attention of his listeners. This session will explore the opportunities of storytelling in scripture, how to relate these stories to our students’ everyday lives and what skills are needed to be an effective storyteller.
