Charlene MacKenzie
Charlene is a Calgary-based teacher and supporter of teachers. Her career included more than 25 years in public education, where she taught mainly secondary mathematics, and added roles as math lead and teacher team lead. Charlene spent many years mining the research to find a way to narrow the achievement gap for learners, and especially how to reach the most vulnerable, who she believed were equally capable of making sense of and enjoying math. Her search was rewarded when she discovered Dr. John Mighton’s ideas and JUMP Math, a charitable organization dedicated to improving math teaching and learning. Thus in recent years, Charlene has devoted her time to roles with JUMP Math, where she continues to advocate for teachers, and Math Minds, a collaborative project in partnership with a Werklund School of Education research team at the University of Calgary.
